What CoreOS is in their own words:
CoreOS is a new Linux distribution. The creators improved it, so that it can provide features needed to run modern infrastructure stacks. The strategies and architectures that influence it allow companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter to run their services at scale with high resilience.
CoreOS is arguably one of the most talked-about operating systems in recent years. What makes it unique is that it is built for the modern infrastructure. Out-of-the-box, it comes with functionalities to do rolling updates of the OS across a cluster. You can also move the workload around accordingly.
CoreOS is also designed for running containers and supports both Docker and Rocket (its own container system) by default. This, coupled with technologies such as etcd, fleet and systemd make it a truly unique operating system. This is why we’re so excited to add support for the new Linux distribution.
Thanks to the fine people over at the Linux distribution, we can today announce that there are official builds of CoreOS optimized for CloudSigma available. We’re currently in the Alpha channel. This will then graduate to Beta, and then finally the Stable channel. The CoreOS image is available in our drives library today under the name CoreOS (Alpha channel).
The default login name for CoreOS is ‘core’, and you have to provide an SSH key in order to log in.
In the near future, we will follow up with another post where we talk about how to deploy a CoreOS cluster on CloudSigma, and explore the power of fleet and etcd.
