One of the things I love most about my job is the sheer variety of customers that we have. It gives me the opportunity to speak with business owners and managers from all walks of life and sectors of the economy. From processing satellite data for the European Space Agency, to running simulated trading environments for Deutsche Boerse, or providing the powerful compute engine behind a next generation search offering like Grepsr, each use case is fascinating and has a different set of compute needs.
For example, more and more small businesses and start-ups are turning to the cloud as their compute environment of choice – and no wonder, considering its flexibility, scalability and availability benefits… something the Spa Therapist Marketing & Accreditation Service (STMA) has discovered since deploying on our platform.
STMA is a new mobile application that gives health and wellness professionals the ability to accredit one another. This chain of qualification grants end users and patients the third-party credibility often desired when seeking a new cosmetologist, massage therapist, nutritionist or what have you. And, because of its widespread applicability and potential user base, STMA’s founder, Saeed Hamid, knew he would need to account for varying demand and user activity, so he needed a cloud-based platform for the app. But, which one?
“The resource efficiency of CloudSigma’s cloud was like nothing else we found on the market, but, considering we wanted to get up and running as quickly as possible, ease-of-use was another big factor for us. Luckily, CloudSigma turned out to be a breeze to develop in and its user interface was much easier to navigate than other cloud providers. For example, I could seamlessly mount and un-mount solid-state drive (SSD) storage on servers, without wasting time manually reapplying policies to various workloads. Because of this kind of functionality, we will soon be using CloudSigma in our production environment, too.”Saeed Hamid, Founder @ STMA
With the fixed VM-sizing and bundled resources of most public cloud providers, leveraging the cloud to scale and meet new demand often doesn’t seem feasible for a growing start-up on a budget. And, STMA learned this firsthand, having experienced dissatisfaction with about 10 different public cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) providers, including Rackspace and Amazon Web Services, before choosing CloudSigma. However, with CloudSigma’s unbundled resources offering, STMA was able to purchase only the resources that it needed, while achieving performance levels. Combined with the purchasing efficiency that CloudSigma’s unbundled resource model delivers, STMA was able to achieve a price/performance point that no other cloud provider could match.
Flexible compute resources and usability aside, it was also important for STMA to identify a cloud platform in which its users could entrust their data. The recent U.S. NSA scandal shed light on data privacy issues and caused many companies to wonder: just how safe is my data? This is an especially important consideration for companies in the health and wellness space, like STMA, whose customers rely on them to keep personal data secure. With this in mind, the fact that CloudSigma offers a location in Switzerland, a country well-known for its comprehensive data protection acts, became yet another big selling point for STMA.
We are excited to watch STMA continue to gain users and market share in the health and wellness space with its mobile app. As many of our customers have grown, our commitment to being the most flexible, user-friendly provider on the market has remained steady. This has allowed companies to continue leveraging our cloud platform through every stage of their success, and we look forward to seeing STMA do the same!
